Bird species recommendation please?
-
I am currently having a large avairy (4 x 6 x 3) built, and would really love to keep a pair or trio of a species of large parrot or cockatoo. The aviary shall of course be filled with very large branches (We currently have entire dead trees at the back of our property which were removed for safety purposes), has a very large shelter, bathes, food and water of course, some nesting boxes and we are even looking into planting entire live trees and plants in there (This will depend on what type of bird I obtain, however.) Any recommendations? I would like for it to be able to be housed with other birds (Please list any suitable species also), have a fairly simple diet (Seed, fruits, veggies, no powder mixes or anything please, as they are very difficult to obtain here!) and be available in Australia. Of course, I shall look into all suggested species (Including the birds that can be kept with them) extensively to ensure I am capable of giving them appropriate care! =D I would look them up myself, but there are so many I dont know where to start! Thanks!

Having an Aviary is a great idea, but you should know that when you have more that a single bird in the same "aviary/cage", they will bond to each other not you! The species of birds you get depends on if you will spend a lot of time with your bird/birds. I personally am a fan of sun conures. the have amazing personalities. if you want them to think of you as their mom/dad, mine does, get them when they are only a few months old... this goes for all birds not just sun conures. just like dogs and cats these birds are a big responsibility and they do NOT like being ignored. They, like dogs are loud, but in stead of barking the squawk!!! they will let you know when they want attention, believe me. They are affectionate, funny, smart and gorgeous birds. good luck!!!

You could get a cockatoo. The avairy doesn't sound very large, so maybe you would want to go with a smaller bird such as an african grey parrot or maybe a couple of small parakeets. I'm more of an expert on parakeets and budgies, though. But, I do think that you could take several parakeets into your avairy. Of course, it depends on what you want, and what you think would be best for you.
