My chameleon is doing really bad?

Dying veiled chameleon?

  • i have a male veiled chameleon, and for the past few days it has been digging at the substrate.he seemed fine, but starting yesterday he only stayed in one spot with his eyes closed all day, unless i reach in and actually rub on his stomach. and he will not move at all.i went to bed last night and then i just woke up and looked at his cage, he was hanging upside down on the branch with only one leg and his eyes closed.i dont know what to think, when i saw him i thought he was dead, but when i picked him up, he slowly opened his eyes.i did everything right i thought, i misted him 3-5 times a day, kept him eating on a reg basis, his cage is about 85 degrees in the daytime, and maybe 75 or 80 at night.when i feed him i gutload the food, and i use the calcium powder.i dont know what to do, or what happened:(...i have a female veiled, and i dont want anything bad to happen to her.and i really want to do something to help my male.i dont have any money for the vet.(and there isnt even a reptile specialized vet around me)

  • Answer:

How old is he. Mine lived for 6 to 7 years. Cannot handle, stresses them out. Also very hard to live with another chameleon (even female) they like to be alone. Need one area for basking. Cool spot in another. Please find a vet. You can do a search for a reptile vet. If you could afford a chameleon with the heat and lights (and hopefully humongous cage) you can afford a reptile vet.

Substrate can kill your reptiles, you must get to a vet that can xray and find out if he's compacted

You didn't mention whether you have a separate basking spot but if the 85F is the "hot spot" then that is far too low for veileds. Veileds need a basking temperature of around 95 - 100F. They love the heat. Digestive problems can result with sub-optimal temperatures.Try moving him to a smaller enclosure for now and warming him up, good luck.

How long have you had these chameleons? Did you handle them a lot? Handling chameleons stresses them out and that may be why he is like this.......
