Need advice about my sick cat (hyperthyroidism, teeth problems & small kidney issues)?
-
My cat is 13 yrs old, and I noticed that she has been drooling a lot and having trouble eating her hard food, so I switched her to soft wet food. After awhile she was having issues eating that, and I noticed a drastic weight loss. I brought her to the vet last week, got lots of blood work done and it turns out that she has Hyperthyroidism along with a small heart murmur, and her levels in her kidneys are a bit high. Now she is starting to have extreme pain while eating. She is drooling this slimy foul smell and I know the vet said that she will need some teeth extractions, but she wants to focus on her thyroid first! Since the surgery is to risky, im not doing it...and the radio active iodine therapy is a bit pricy I need to wait on that, so for now the vet put her on this new Hills Y/D Thyroid diet food. At first she was really liking it, but now she cant even eat the hard food, to painful for her teeth, so I have just been giving her the soft wet food, and she is really starting to have issues eating that as well and will sit there and stare at it or go back into the kitchen because she is still hungry but she cant eat (always hungry due to the thyroid problem) As of last night I noticed that her drooling has become worse, it is making sores on her mouth as its always wet, I constantly have to wipe her mouth.....But my main problem is that shes not eating really much at all, and I need for her to be eating this new food so when I get more blood work done for her in 3 weeks hopefully the results come back good. I feel like she is withering away and I cant do anything about it......it is breaking my heart. I called the vet today and left a msg as I would like to bring her back to get her mouth checked to see if we can give her some antibiotics or something for now to help so she can eat..... Any suggestions would be very much appreciated, I dont know what else I can do. :( I feel if this keeps up and nothing good comes out of the blood work I might have to make a very difficult decision that I dont want to do :(

Answer:
I am so sorry to hear this. My beautiful girl had renal failure last summer and the symptoms were drooling, foul breath, inability to eat- hence weight loss. It was totally heartbreaking. She went downhill so fast in the space of a week. She had had 18 happy years of peaceful life with me from aged 8 weeks. I knew I had to make 'that' desicion, and took her to the vets to have it. However, she died on the vets table, before the euthanising injection. Its awful to see your cat in a bad way. If you do make the decision, don't feel guilt. She'll know your love for her. Its more awful for her to be in pain and starving, than to be out of that misery. But I know how it wrecks you, who are we to play god. But if suffering can be stopped.... On the upside, she's 5 yrs younger than mine, and if its just her teeth, they can be sorted, bad breath and drooling gone and she'll eat again. Hovere, if she's so very weak from not feeding, will she withstand aneasthetic for the dental work? Have I helped..... I dont feel i have, but i hope so, i do feel for you. x

She needs to be put on methimazole, and not dry food that she obviously cannot eat! She needs to eat, that's more important than anything, and she can have that nasty mouth fixed. All the bacteria that it's pouring into her system is causing her kidney numbers to be high, and may also be causing her heart issues. The main focus should be on getting her mouth fixed, as without that nothing is going to help. If her mouth is that bad, it really isn't going to be helped terribly by antibiotics, and her thyroid isn't going to be helped by a food she cannot eat. What on earth was the vet thinking?
