What is digital audio?

What device can convert optical digital audio to 5.1 channel analog audio?

  • I have an audio source that outputs a digital audio signal through Toslink optical cable (up to 8 channels). I also have a 5.1 channel sound system which has three 3.5mm stereo analog inputs (one for front, one for rear, and one for centre and sub-woofer). Is there a piece of hardware that can convert the optical digital signal to six analog signals for under $100? Many thanks.

  • Answer:

1 x http://www.amazon.com/Sewell-Digital-Decoder-Surround-Toslink/dp/B005D8YTKQ 3 x http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=5612 Connect the RCA to 3.5 mm cables to the corresponding jacks. So plug one of the cables into the sub and center RCA jacks on the device on amazon, then connect the 3.5 mm cable to your speaker system. If the center and sub channels are switched, switch the two plugs connected to the adapter. Repeat for the other channels. Not all devices with toslink output at 5.1, and the source needs to be 5.1 as well. If you have a computer, you'll be better off with a internal sound card (May I suggest the ASUS Xonar DS), or even a USB adapter.

As of today, none. If there is, more expensive than buying a 5.1 optical capable receiver. I do have the same dilemma ever since I upgraded to blu-ray ,HD media player, and HDTV. Still searching after all these years until I decided to upgrade my receiver and use HDMI instead.
