Is it me or are S-video cables hard to insert?

Why don't S Video cables work?

  • In order to watch DVDs on my tv, I have used red & white stereo cables for sound and an SVideo cable for the video. I get sound, but no picture. I don't think it is the cable itself, since I tried another one and it doesn't work either. When I use a yellow video cable, everything is fine, but I invested $50 in the stupid S video cable and would like to use it! Obviously I have the right line/input/video source selected on my tv or it wouldn't work with the yellow cable either. Could it be a problem with the input receptacle at the back of my tv? I inherited this 56" monster when I moved in and don't have a manual or a history for the tv. 1) I have never been able to make S-video cables work in any capacity. Is there something I am missing? 2) Is there an easy fix it the tv's input is 'warped'? 3) Do you think Best Buy will accept a return on the $50 cable? It came in those aggravating plastic packages that has to be destroyed to be opened, so I can't return it properly packaged.

  • Answer:

It's possible that the input connector on the TV is bad but not likely. Make sure you have gone through the menu section of the TV using the remote and look for video input options. Most TV's will automatically switch to the best input source connected but not always. If you havn't tried hooking up the Svideo cable all by it's self to check for picture before the audio cables, give that a shot. Oh and do your self a favor and take that overpriced cable back to Best Buy and order a cable just as good for $3.00 at www.firefold.com

In most TVs, Composite and S-video are considered the SAME input. A little mechanical switch detects the cable and processes the video as needed. S-video will give slightly better picture but no s-video cable is worth more than $5-$10. Even Home-depo and Orchard or Longs carry those. Since you get composite video, there is definitely no circuit problem. It is quite possible that the connecotr is bad, so the TV can't detect you have plugged an s-video cord. Just return the cable and use composite video. BBy will accept the cable. At min. you should get credit to buy something else.
