Widescreen is the way films were meant to be seen. 16:9 format is the way they are filmed and shown in theaters. 4:3 is a square picture which you typically see on older televisions. "This film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit this screen", which means they crop out the sides and you're actually losing 33% of the picture so it fits on your 4:3 television. If you play a show in 4:3 on a widescreen television then it appears as a small square in the center. You can adjust the televisions aspect to "full", "zoom", "wide zoom", or "normal"...which will sometimes cut it down even more to fill up your screen.
