How do I add further images to a DVD disc?

Having accumulated a pile of CD discs which contain family snapshots taken over the years I reasoned it might be more effective to use a DVD disc: 4.7Gb versus 700Mb seems a no brainer, but I have tried to do this using Roxio7.5 and, whilst it happily stored my first batch of images it refused to accept any more when I tried to add more images some weeks later, in spite of the disc being less than half full. In addition to digital images from my cameras I am scanning very old B&W, historic, family images to transfer to disc - preferable a DVD rather than a CD: mainly to save space and simplify filing. What am I doing wrong ? Maybe I have used to wrong process in Roxio - I find the options a little puzzling, even ambiguous - and the instructions somewhat economic in the detail.

I had some issues with Roxio in the past due to it's enormous size and complexity. I started using very powerful and reliable and most importantly free program CDBurnerXP (works with Vista and 7). The only option while recording you need to choose "leave disk open" that's it. This will enable you to add future sessions. Enjoy.

There are two types of cd's and DVDs. R & RW the R means you can only record on it once. If you close the cession it can never be used again if you don't close it, you can't play it in anything other then a computer. RW means it is rewritable so it can be used many times. You can burn and erase on RW disks approximately 1000 times. If you will be playing them in a cd player or a dvd or blue ray player the cessions have to be closed or else it can not be played.
