How to view freeview channels?

Will digital switchover ensure I can access Freeview?

  • My previous normal TV got a perfectly good analogue signal through the aerial, however having just bought an LCD flatscreen tv with freeview, none of the freeview channels appear through the aerial - not even BBC, itv etc. Both Argos & Sharp seem to think it's because the new TVs need a stronger input signal through the aerial to display any channels but as a consequence I have the facility to view 'freeview' on my new tv but no actual channels. They suggest that when the swtichover occurs in our area next April, the new & boosted digital signal that will be transmitted as part of this should be stronger and thus enable us to receive our Freeview channels. Are they right? Is it worth investing in a booster now if we won't need it later? Do newer TVs really require a stronger signal to display channels through the aerial?

  • Answer:

Freeview .co.uk Use their “can I get TV in my area” facility. Generally, you will need less signal strength to get a digital picture. That’s a function of digital signals. You’ll get as good picture on minimum signals as some other on a maximum signal. If your area is covered by a digital signal then there no good reason why you should not be getting it now. It will be with any doubt your signal quality. You’re correct to mention the aerial as this is where you should do a little research. Find the name and whereabouts of your area Transmitter. Check the direction and distance on a map. Lookup that “Transmitters” Specifications’ on line, it will give you the area in which it is expected to cover and the quality of the signal in your area. Arm with this enlightenment you should approach a reputable aerial insulation company to assess your installation.

All areas have digital reception; with the exception of a few isolated pockets, due to geographical problems. The switchover actually means the time when the analogue service will be turned off. The advice you were given is more or less correct. A booster will not enhance a weak signal. Cannot comment on why you cannot get some digital reception, without knowing more about your set up. *** More info here - http://www.freeview.co.uk/availability http://www.ricability-digitaltv.org.uk/pages/connecting-up/idtvs.htm

If Freeview is not being transmitted in your area yet there is no way to tell. However I find it likely that you will need to make some changes when it is.
