What channels are clear qam?

Will a DVR with a built-in QAM tuner allow me to receive Time-Warner cable digital channels?

  • I just got a Panasonic DVR but it only has a regular HD digital tuner. It receives all the basic HD channels here in Los Angeles fine. But it won't receive the cable channels such as CNN, ESPN, Lifetime, etc., which are carried here by Time-Warner Cable. I saw another DVR in the store, a Sony model, which has a QAM tuner, and might have read somewhere that that would do the trick. Is that true? I disconnected my Time-Warner and don't want to re-subscribe to them.

  • Answer:

There is no FREE lunch. If you disconnected , unless you steal cable, no receiver can get the signal that is not transmitted! But has, a QAM tuner can receive the clear or unscrambled cable channels - This assumes you have basic cable service.

If those channels are unencrypted, you could likely view/record them with a QAM tuner. If they are encrypted, you need a digital box. I assume you mean you canceled only digital cable. If you canceled cable altogether, you would get nothing legally.
