How does pausing live TV work with Sky+ and Virgin+?

Setting up my sky plus box?

  • I am a sky customer and originally had a normal sky box, but my mum has given me her sky+ box. I plugged the sky cable from the aerial into the box and the box works and I can view channels and also pause live tv etc. But come to setting a record reminder for a program, as soon as its recording, it turns the Satellite signal of and says no Satellite signal is being received and doesn't record. I spoke to sky about this and they said that I have to have a second cable from the dish to the box and are gonna charge me £60 to come out and set it up. I know you can get cable splitters for Satellite so I was wondering if I could split the single cable that comes from the dish using a Satellite splitter, into 2 and plug them into the box so that there are 2 cables. Or if that wont work, does anyone know any other ways I can get it to work instead of having to pay the £60.

  • Answer:

The problem with splitting the signal is that the sky+ box chooses between a block of frequencies containing a range of channels in each and this is controlled by the LMB(Receiver on your Dish) through your sky+ box and there are around 3/4 blocks of frequencies that the LMB down converts to the sky+ box. Therefore if you split the signal and input the signals into the sky+ box and record a channel for example A and you wont be able to view a channel B which is contained in the next block of frequencies. The LMB should have two outputs (if not you will need to get one off sky), get yourself some cable and two connectors and connect it up yourself. Hope this helps.
