Network problem on Windows XP?
-
We have a 4 years old Windows XP (and other computers, but let's focus on the old guy). It's been working perfectly until recently, when the network just failed on it. We tried everythin, nothing worked, so we bought a new adapter. It's been working, until yesterday (we started having the problems with the last adapter about a week ago, and like 4 days ago we bought the new one). At first it kept saying 'Limited or no connectivity', so we simple rebooted the modem, that didn't work, so we rebooted the computer, didn't work either. After that, we reinstalled the adapter, and since that didn't work, we rebooted the modem and the computer again. Still nothing. So... once, just hopelessly trying to connect to our usual network, I accidently clicked on another network without realizing it, and by some really awkward myracle, the WEP key for the network we connect to worked for another network, as a WPA-PSK key, and it connected us to the internet. But when we launched internet explorer, the website just kept reloading itself, and kept saying 'navigation cancelled', when we haven't clicked anything, cursor right in the middle of the screen. So I disconnected it again, and tried to connect to our usual network again, and that's when it got really awkward. It worked, we were connected. But just to check, I went on google, and gosh, it didn't work! Just kept reloading itself, 'navigation cancelled'. We tried searching for viruses, tried deactivating the firewall, nothing changed. The antivirus didn't find anything, the firewall wasn't the problem. So we did system restore to the 28th of January, and god damnit, limited or no connectivity again. We are clueless on what to do next. What could be the problem? How can we fix it? Help, anyone?

Answer:
OK before you get the hammer to put the poor old thing out of its misery lets try a few things... :) When your system says it has "Limited or no connectivity" that means, either your wireless adapter could not connect to the WiFi network, and/or the wired or wireless connection did not connect correctly and Windows assigned a default IP address which 99.999999999% of the time wont work with any home network. First you need to use another system to download a good malware program. (Adaware or the like). Make a CD, preferably, and put into the XP system and run it. Don't trust the apps on your system as they may be compromised and not function as they should. While that is running, again use another system, Google the following; AVG Rescue start up disk Again make a CD of the file(s) you download. When the male ware scan is done, shutdown the old system. Wait 30 seconds and turn it back on AND insert the CD right away. If given the option to boot from CD choose yes. If you miss booting from the CD or you were not given the option, restart the system and try it again. Once it boots from the CD either start or if its starts let the program run til it is finished. I am going to assume that your system has been hijacked and has malware and/or a virus(s). It sounds a lot like both malware and virus infestation. If neither of these things work you may have to consider a complete wipe and re-install. I don't believe that your NIC (Network Interface Card) is bad, any of them. If you have any problems you can contact me through this site. Hope that helps.
