  • thinking of buying a lcd hd tv . i want it also to plug into my mac mini . the mac mini has a dvi port and so does the monitor , the monitor also has a hdmi port . what is the best way to conect the two do i need a dvi-dvi connection cable or do i need dvi-hdmi cable / converter . which will give the best picture

    The older Mac Mini with one full-sized DVI port can support only one display. You cannot connect both your LCD HDTV and monitor to it at the same time. Only the latest Mac Mini with two video outputs (one miniDVI and one miniDisplayPort) can support two monitors at the same time. It comes with a miniDVI-to-DVI adapter, but no adapter for the miniDisplayPort, which means you will have to buy a miniDisplayPort-to-DVI adapter separately from Apple.

The least amount of conversions usually gives the best picture. The lowest quality connector is the highest quality you can achieve. ex. VGA ----> HDMI it will only be VGA quality DVI -----> DVI It will be DVI quality DVI -----> HDMI It will only be DVI Quality

i did a lot of research on the hdmi cable and you will want a good one. The one I looked at was going to be over 80 bucks. I do not remember all the details but i would google info for Hdmi cable and do some reading.. Just don't go to walmart for it.

DVI > HDMI as most TV will only accept a limited number of inputs: for PC inputs the Sync frequency MUSt be 60Hz and the resolution is often MUCH LESS than the maximum, 1024*768 or 800*600 are the normal ones accepted byt he TV. to use the 1920*1080 you MUST use the HDMI input and a DVI to HDMI adaptor otherwise it will not accept the PC input this is a delivberate design by TV makers to stop them being competition for their monitor ranges.
