Is an DVI connection as Good as an HDMI Connection?
-
Basically, My problem here is that I have only 1 HDMI Slot and one DVI slot on my graphics card and would really like to Dual screen, I don;t want to use splitters or similar products, just a normal cable. My monitors do not have a native DVI slot but I have seen HDMI to DVI Cables . That brings me to my question of, Is DVI as good as HDMI, I know they're pretty similar in what they do. I also have 2 mini display ports I can use, but that would mean Buying 2 new monitors. any information or helpful opinions on what i can do e.t.c would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
To clear up some of the confusion here, a DVI video signal is no different to an HDMI video signal, they are both digital and capable of high resolutions and high definition. The major difference is that HDMI is capable (via the cable) of transporting both Video and Audio feeds where DVI only transports Video, also HDMI will support both RGB as well as YCbCr, DVI only does the RGB format. So getting a DVI to HDMI cable or a cable converter will in theory be the same quality image, the converter will loose a bit of quality due to the extra connection point but generally it is not noticeable to the human eye. The only difference between DVI and HDMI for video quality is the type of DVI port or cable you use. Most are DVI-I this is Integrated, meaning it supports both Analogue and digital signal, there is also DVI-D, this is digital output only so it carries no analogue signal, some are DVI-A, this is an analogue signal only (no digital) and is the same (lower) quality as VGA is. The Mini ports are simply a smaller connection and you should be able to get the socket to fit the connections at the other end.

DVI is a bigger connector as it's designed to support both Digital (HDMI) and Analog (VGA) style signals in one connector. There is no difference at all between the digital video signals on a DVI or HDMI connector - you get exactly the same quality. (Displayport is the same again - a different style connector, but the same digital video signals & only a suitable cable is needed to connect to an HDMI or DVI monitor).

no. dvi is not as good as hdmi. dvi does not support sound! there is an exception. newer ati cards can support sound on dvi, but the 'modified' dvi connector is included with the card.

not a noticable difference, especially if you're using monitors rather than TVs or something
