Why does my computer screen keep turning off?

How do I keep my computer screen from turning off?

  • Every 10 minutes or so the screen of my laptop goes black. I guess it's to save power or something. I set the screen saver to only go off every 500 minutes but the screen still goes black and eventually logs me off. I need to defragment my computer but I can't because that takes several hours and it stops when the computer logs me out. Is there anyway to stop this from happening?

  • Answer:

Check your power options you have listed.

There should be an option to keep the actual computer awake. Try going to the same place where you would change the screen saver time and there should be an option for hard disk/computer sleep then change that.

This is prolly on the laptop bettery options. There is an option for battery saving (this must be it where it s now) one for best performance, etc. Usually you can find battery options on the tray (down right corner, next to the clock), or the control panel.

You haven't given your operationg system, so my _exact_ instructions ( below )may not be applicable, but you essentially have to change your power options so that your screen will never turn off. OR, more economically, you could set it so your screen turns off, but your HDD and processor continue working on whatever tasks you've assigned them beyond this point. below are instructions for the most common operating system, vista. ( though it's quite similar for XP and 7 macs are somewhat different ) Control Panel -> Power Options -> change power settings ( for whatever setting you'll put on when you want to leave your screen on for long periods of time ) -> advanced power settings ( blue, below the main options ) -> Now at this point you set your computer to keep working even after the screen has blanked with: Hard disk-> turn off hard disk after.... -> never ( under both plugged in and on battery.... or just one if you prefer ) AND Sleep -> Never ( in all cases ) Now you can set it so your screen doesn't go off too, but I'd assume if you needed to monitor the progress closely, you'd be sitting a the computer and wouldn't have a problem with idling. In any case you do that by: display -> turn off the display after -> never ( in all cases, or the ones you prefer ) you can also edit what happens when you close the lid of your laptop, if you'd like to be able to close it as soon as you've set it tasks with: power lid and buttons -> lid-close-action-> Do nothing ( in all cases ) Hope this helps :)

Hi there, right click on ya battery and select power options, then select 'change plan settings', then adjust your timers from there. Thats for windows 7 and vista. for xp its change battery settings then change plan settings. Hope that helps. Andy
