Laptop is slowing way down?
-
I have a laptop that occassionally slow down by having 100% of its CPU taken up (i.e. RAM; the stats could be found on task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del)). Normally it's just a few browser windows (how much RAM does that normally take up?) and anything else in the background is just standard stuff you get when you turn on a PC (which pretty much takes up no RAM at all except for the occassional System Idle Process). How can I resolve this? I have tried running AdAware to get rid of all the spam (but that's not the problem apparently) and the laptop has a descent 512MB RAM. Please do not tell me to send the laptop to an IT Specialist or reset the PC to its factory settings - those are the last resorts. Only helpful advice will be appreciated. Bad advice or stupid comments will be thumbed down. Cheers

Answer:
If your using Vista you need more than 512 K of ram , also check what startup progs you have running by clicking start/run msconfig , then disable the progs your not using

You don't say what applications you have running so that makes it a bit hard.........check your AV and when that runs, they can use 100% CPU if they are not set up to run as a low priority. Try ccleaner - that helps in a similar/better way than adaware. Check your startup folder, you can probably delete most of the stuff in there e.g. Adobe and office quick starts - they all take up memory. Some browers windows also use a lot of memory/CPU to run adverts etc. check which windows you have open and which you really need. Finally, 512mb isn't all that much nowadays, I would suggest 1gig is a minimum.

try delete files you dont need and go to 'start' then, 'all programs' the, 'Accessories' then, 'system tools' then, 'disk clean-up' run it on your main hard drive. this will remove any temp files which you no longer need. this will free space and should increase speed

put your laptop into safemode, make sure if you have anti-virus that the definitions are up to date, restart the computer, press f8 until the windows advanced option screen appears, select safemode, (not the one with networking) Then when the computer starts run a full system virus scan. I recomend using Nortonm anti-virus as i use this and have no problems. Make sure your computer is not connected to the internet or network. It sounds as if you have a virus.

Maybe you have a lot of files - try deleting some if you can or move them (To a memory card, for example) You may also have a lot of programs - if you don't use soem and they are not important then remove them. Internet history/cookies may also slow a computer down so maybe try clearing that. You could also defrag your computer

go into start, accesorys, system tools and there you will find lots of clean up stuff i recomend disk cleen up disk defragmenter it will take ages, but it does clean it up. if this doesn't work i would choose the option saying restore system defaults or system restore

You may still have a virus that's causing the CPU to be used 100% of the time. My son's laptop did - the virus just caused the CPU to run constantly. Look at your processes - what process is using 100% of CPU time? That will help you track down the problem.
