Spilled Wine on Laptop, how to remove residue from inside?
-
I've got an HP Pavilion G6 Notebook. Last week I accidentally spilled a glass of watered down white wine on it. It wasn't that much, in fact I didn't actually think any of it got inside, I just wiped it off the keyboard, finished my email and turned off the computer. To be safe, I pulled out the battery that night. The next day I went to turn on my laptop and it was obviously glitchy. I couldn't get past the log in screen (I'd press one key and a different letter would come up, etc..) I then noticed liquid around the on button. I immediately shut it down, unplugged from power cord and pulled out the battery. I set it upside down in a tent position with the CD drive opened and a fan blowing on it for a day and a half. When I went to turn it on again, it was still giving me the same glitch on the start screen and the keys felt 'sticky' when I pressed them down (like there was goop on the underside of the keys.) Also, it was hard to put the battery back in because the slide button to lock it in was kind of stuck as though it also had residue in it. So, apparently a hell of a lot more wine got inside than I originally thought, and despite being watered down it was enough to gunk up the insides. Another odd glitch is the screen brightness changes each time I press a key. I don't know what else may be working incorrectly because I turned it off to avoid further damage. As far as I've been able to tell, this is totally not covered under any warranty despite the laptop only being about five months old. I've read some articles online that suggest completely unscrewing everything and running distilled water over the parts to wash off the gunk. I sorta attempted this, but 2 screws in I was already completely baffled so I stopped my attempt. So now I'm asking... would it be worth it to pour distilled water over the keys with everything closed up, or are there parts of a laptop that absolutely can't get wet even when no power is running to it? If I do basically rinse out my laptop completely, how long do I need to let it dry out (Even if using a fan or the rice trick.) And if I do this will it fix the key glitch? (EG: Is that being caused by the wine residue, or is it already fried?) Is my laptop basically toast, or is it worth it taking it somewhere and spending money for repair? Will it ever be as good as it once was or should I just cut my losses now and blow another $550 I don't have on a new computer? Saving files isn't a big issue. I had basically everything that was important backed up. I'm mostly concerned with the actual laptop. Thanks.

Answer:
The wine already got down into the keyboard membrane and it won't dry out. If it got that far, it no doubt got farther. Pouring distilled water on it? LOL! You can't be that ignorant. Anyone who would tell you that is an idiot. I repair these things daily. Your best bet is take it to a repair shop before you foul it up any worse. EDIT: Have at it then and disregard my 18 years experience in computer repair. If you aren't willing to hear the truth, why did you bother asking in here? For every one person in a forum that knows something, there are always 200 more who don't have a clue. How do you propose to dry out all the moisture under the integrated circuit chips? I suppose if some half wit told you to run it through the wash machine in rinse cycle and then 45 minutes in the dryer, you'd have done that too.....

I wouldn't pour water on it without taking it apart first, laptops are a real pain to take apart though so maybe a relative or someone you know could help who has some maintenance skills. Sometimes the keyboard sits into a plastic "seat" which would have protected the inside of your machine to some extent so you might be lucky however the keyboard is normally connected to the main board inside the computer so you will have to find the cable which is normally a flat cable called a ribbon cable - disconnect this and you may be able to release the keyboard from the front and clean it up a bit using damp cotton buds. Worst case you could buy a replacement keyboard for it.
