Answer:
Sounds like your video card took a dump! By going into safe mode you enabled the minimal video drivers and the screen came back. This tells me you have a problem with your video card. I would first try a few things in video properties like changing screen resolution and so on. You may have accidently misconfigured it! If you have booted it as you normally would, and the problem didnt come back, it may simply have been that you had a program such as a video game running in the background and it didnt reset your graphics mode when you shut down. Different games and software change your resolution automatically and simply powering the sytem down by switching it off may have been the problem.

Since you have checked your video card I would advice you to update your video drivers as well for future avoidance of ay video related problems. And yes please don't do system restore so often because that can corrupt your computers hard drive.

keeping it short and simple....all this has nothing to do wiv a virus on ur comp... jst the fact tht ur pc display is proper when u start in safe mode has 2 possibilities.... 1> Ur Display Card or AGP card drivers are corrupted nd u need to reinstall it 2> Ur Display Card or AGP card is gone bonkers nd u need to get it fixed or replaced

The desktop layout is saved, when PC is turned off.. maybe there was a mistake when you turned off the power and the saving wasn't good...
