Why do my computer keeps restarting at startup?

Computer keeps restarting?

  • My computer keeps restarting itself at random. My computer has always been really noisy and gets dusty easily and we have had a few instances where dust needed to be removed from my computer. At the start of December, my computer shut itself down and refused to start up again. We had an engineer out who told me it was a motherboard problem and put a new one. Now, every couple of days, my computer restarts itself saying it recovered from a "serious error" and ever since I had the new motherboard put in, every once in a while when I'm typing, it'll stall and repeat the letter ("typinggggggggggggggggggg") or delete the whole sentence if I press backspace once. My keyboard is not sticky. This has happened ever since I got the new motherboard. My computer just restarted again, a blue screen came up and started "checking disks" and started doing something involving 3 stages. Then it came back on. Fan? Motherboard? Virus? Anything else? Help?

  • Answer:

It may be a fatal error that is causing the computer to restart. You can easily stop the restart problem by changing your system features to restrict automatic startup when your computer's having a problem. Here is how: Use System Failure Settings to Stop Automatic Restarts. 1. Click Start and Open the Control Panel 2. Go to System and Maintenance, Click on System. 3. Select Advanced System Settings and choose Advance tab. 4. Under Startup and Recovery, click on Settings. 5. Under System failure uncheck Automatically restart.

you should let it run throught the 3 stages of Chkdsk its scanning your harddrive for problems.. go in your command prompt and type Chkdsk and then reboot your computer and let that run to see if it fixes anything.. could be a possible virus\ but to me it seems to be a hardware issue.. or the compatibility of the motherboard with your other devices.

You probably need to change your power supply.

My first thought would be a heat or power issue. If it is an old computer, I would replace the fans and the power supply. Both are relatively cheap and if you still have the issue you can take them back. If you have anyone around who knows something about computers, you can check your Event Log to see if something happened. It could be you are getting the infamous "blue screen" and the computer is set to reboot. This can be turned off, so you can see what the blue screen is telling you. To do so, right Cilck on My Computer, go to Properties, Click on Advanced, click on the Settings button under Startup and Recovery, and uncheck Automatically Restart under the System Failure area. When the computer has the problem again, it may display a blue screen with an error code that can help you determine the problem.
