Difference between Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP?

  • I was looking at getting a dell mini, and was wondering what the differences are? I heard ubuntu was faster than xp home, but I am not sure if this is true. Also, I am used to xp, so would it be a huge changeto ubuntu? Also, is xp worth the extra money? Its $50 more for xp home, so I was wondering why. Thanks :)

    If you're getting a Dell Mini, just get the Ubuntu version. Netbooks are just used to surf the web, using light weight programs (such as Open Office), and going on messenger. You can do all that on Ubuntu, it's much faster, and it's $50 cheaper. If you were getting a Desktop or Laptop, I would say get the Windows version, since Desktops and laptops run games and Adobe programs, but since it's just a Netbook you're better off with Ubuntu. It's going to get some time to get the hang of, but you should like the new experience a lot.

Both are good Operating Systems but the advantage of Ubuntu is that it is a free open source OS. There are TONS of freebies that you can add to it like games, productivity software, utilities, etc. I would suggest you get the Windows program and install Ubuntu inside it like a standard Windows application. When you boot up your computer it will give you the option to pick which OS you want to load. If you find you don't like Ubuntu you can uninstall it like any other Windows program and you still have Windows XP to use. Ubuntu uses a lot less system resources so it works great on older, slower computers too so don't get rid of your old PC yet. Hope this helps.

If You are using You PC for Internet, Music, Videos, Documents go with ubuntu, it is the linux distribution best suited for new users. Linux is a free OS intended for users who dont want to pay Microsoft too much money for an OS. It is faster, has no viruses and will not get slower overtime. However, if You are using your PC for gaming or You use an application for job that You just cant do without and that doesnt run under Linux, get XP.
