Note on Nook model names: "Nook Color" is B&N's color ereader; and "Nook Simple Touch Reader" (aka Nook Touch) is their latest monochrome ereader. Which is best overall? You have to decide based upon your needs... Buy a Kindle or Nook Touch if you're most interested in long-run reading. Their E Ink Pearl display is much better than Nook Color's LCD (backlit) screen for reading text. Deciding between a Kindle and Nook Touch: Kindle advantages: keyboard, 3G model available, 4G internal memory, Text-To-Speech, MP3 support. Nook Touch advantages: touch screen, less page-turn flashing, EPUB support, SD memory expansion port, library borrowing now (vs later this year for Kindle). Buy a Nook Color if you're most interested in apps and games and browsing the web. Reading long-run text is as tolerable as it is with a computer monitor, and the Kindle's and Nook Touch's capabilities in the non-reading areas pale in comparison. Consider also ebook purchasing: If you like buying books from Amazon better, or if you want to purchase ebooks internationally, favor Kindle; if you like buying books better from B&N and if you don't need to buy ebooks outside of the US, favor Nook.

Hi, Girly1, all of the eReaders on the market have Wi-Fi built in. Kindle is old design and hardware. E-Ink Nook Simpletouch has the latest generation touch screen display, no page turn lag, it weights less, and its battery lasts twice as long, and it doesn't blink on each page turn - much better than current Kindle 3. Even though Nook Color has LCD touchscreen, it's a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight and produces less glare all of which are dooming reading on iPad. The screen is amazing and readable/viewable at wide angles. When you walk in with the Nook to Barnes & Noble store, you’re allowed to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals. Nook allows to lend Nook books for two weeks to friends and family or share with your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc.) Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks. Kindle only supports eBooks in its proprietary AZW format. Nook, on the other hand, supports both DRM-protected and DRM-free ebooks in ePub format thus it supports ebooks from B&N store, from any other DRM-free source on the web, and from public libraries. Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, the e-Ink Nook might be better for you. If you want something more from your device (color graphs and charts of books, childrens books, photos and videos, web sites in full color) at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet. Nook Color has several apps that already come with the device (Pandora Internet radio, QuickOffice, etc.) and hundreds of other apps are available for download. Also, you can use the Social Settings screen to link your NOOK Color to your Facebook account and your Twitter account. You can also import all your contacts from your Google Gmail account. Once you have linked to Facebook and Twitter and set up email contacts, you can lend and borrow books, recommend books, and share favorite quotes with your friends. Nook store has over 2 million of paid books and about the same number of free public domain books. Nook has USB port and microSD card slot. You can buy Nook’s at Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Millon, Walmart, BestBuy, Staples, OfficeMax, Fred Mayer, P.C. Richard etc. stores and web sites.

The software on the Kindle is better sorted out than the Nook. Since you read a lot of books, Amazon and Kindle work hand in hand. As you know Barnes and Nobles is invested in the Nook. Amazon's Kindle has the better software behaviors for the time being. I know people with both. My threshold for software is simple. If it starts to distract me from reading because it is herky jerky in executing commands or I am waiting noticeably for the page to turn, then I don't want it. It should work seamlessly as flipping a physical page to a book. It could be a comic book or a classic like Moby Dick, all related operations need to be effective and timely. I don't need to think, hope and pray it will work the way it should. If you are like me. Kindle. Best.

The Kindle is the best e-reader on the market, if reading is what you intend to do with it (instead of games, apps, music etc). I have written a full review of the Kindle if you are interested click the link below; http://familymanfinance.blogspot.com/p/scotts-product-plugs.html

I would totally recommend kindle over the nook personally. You can get a good deal on a kindle 3 here: http://www.syncpedia.com/goto/kindle_store In my opinion kindle is the best on the feature & selection front. The problem with the color nook is it has backlit screen which can cause eyestrain, whereas the kindle screen is like real paper with no artificial light beaming into your skull. The monocrhome nook is fine but I can't see why you would want one when for about the same price you can get a free 3g kindle (whereas nook discontinued their 3g service). The most basic wifi only kindle is fine for many people, but I would seriously consider this special offer 3g model: http://www.syncpedia.com/goto/kindle_3g_special Basically for just $25 more now (with no monthly fees) your getting unlimited internet everywhere, vs just wifi hotspots with the basic kindle. I love using mine to read news/facebook/email etc, so it's a crazy deal. The ads are easy to ignore on the special offer model, as they are just on the screensavor and menu, not actual content. B&N claims to have more ebooks but in mu experience amazon has the ebooks I actually wanted to buy, not just junk ebooks :). Also, your locking yourself into a format, and amazon is outselling the nook by wide margins, so it's the safer bet for protecting your book investments since they appear to be winning the standards war. The only real advantage of the nook is it has easier ebook sharing with friends and you can read some free ebooks per day in a barnes and noble store. Amazon supports ebook sharing too but it's a little less universal. Hope that helps.
