How do I get the ringtone on my phone?

How do i get ringtone files i downloaded on to my phone????

i downloaded a heap of funny stuff,ringtones n sounds n stuff ...now i connected my phone up to computer with its usb port, n tryed sevaral times to put them on there but cant. why is this?????i also tried converting it thru the software i got wiv my phone....but dont thing it converts to what my phone caters for, so any suggestions by any1 at all, will be much appreciated........ thanku to all that has helped.
