DVI to HDMI Connection?

HDMI to DVI Laptop to HDTV Connection?

  • I have a 32" Magnavox HDTV that is about 4 years old. I also have an HP Laptop. The HP Laptop has an HDMI output on it. The Magnavox TV does not have an HDMI input, but it does have a DVI input. So, I purchased an HDMI to DVI cable, plugged the HDMI into my laptop and the DVI into my HDTV, and attempted to connect the two. First, all I got was a white screen on my HDTV. Then, I went to personalization > display settings > and selected monitor number 2 (the HDTV) and selected "This is my main monitor" and also selected "Extend the desktop to this monitor". The desktop showed up on my TV, but it did not fill out the screen and it was flickering. My TV supports up to 1080i, so I selected the resolution that is 1080i (1920x1080), but then the TV only showed some of the desktop; it was too magnified, still blurry, and still flickering. I tried to change the refresh rate, but it won't let me go past 30 hz, so I don't know how to fix the flickering problem either. I can choose a lower resolution, but then it only shows up as a smaller screen centered in the TV and is still blurry and flickering. What do I need to do to get my laptop showing in HD 1080i with no flickering and hopefully no blurry problem? I am VERY competent with computers and entertainment hardware, but I am very stumped on this. The cable is a high-quality, heavy duty Monster cable and it is properly connected to both ports. I've played with all the settings I thought were possible but I can't fix the problem. Please help me!

  • Answer:

See if you have a resolution that will let you select a 60Hz refresh. I wouldn't focus as much on the resolution until you can get a refresh that is close to the native refresh of the TV (60Hz). What opsys are you running on the Laptop? Jim I don't have Vista on any of my machines to give exact directions. IIRC correctly, the video interface was almost the same as the one in Win7. That set should have no problems running that resolution through the HDMI to DVI cable. HDMI and DVI are in essence the same signal with audio added to the HDMI. We did some fairly extensive testing with the Philips engineers when they first were converting to HDMI.

"So, I purchased an HDMI to DVI cable" is where you went wrong. There is no magic cable that does this.
