How do I get analog and digital channels?

What devices are required to get free digital channels with old analog TV? ...also, best devices?

  • I have an old analog TV that works well. It has AV connectors (connected to my Xbox), and a coaxial connection, but no old-style antenna connections. What devices are required to get free (over the air) digital channels? ... a converter box plus an antenna? ... just a converter box? Also, what particular brand and model devices would you recommend?

  • Answer:

(This answer assumes you are located in North America) -You need an antenna that is suited for your location. -A converter box or a recorder with built in ATSC digital tuner. >and a coaxial connection, but no old-style antenna connections. Modern antenna connectors are coax connectors. Older twin screw antenna connectors were discontinued many decades ago. For a tuner, Walmart sells a DVR with built in tuner for about $200. If you want to go the converter box route, the best models (Zenith/Insignia with analog pass through) are no longer manufactured and tend to be expensive on the used market. I'd look at the info on the first link below and compare the list to what you can find. If you can't find a used Zenith/Insignia/Channel Master at a reasonable price, I'd hunt for an RCA DAT 800B1, 809, or newer Tivax Artec Zinwell The type of antenna you need depends on things like your location and the construction of the building you are in. You can share your reception information by using the "wrapper" in your TV fool results. It will look like this: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d7fb9c8aecb8d37

In the middle of 2009 television stations that broadcasted over the air signals began to broadcast only digital versions of their programming. With this switch, old TVs like yours, that can only read analog signals, need to be fitted with a digital converter. Digital converters connect through your coaxial connection like any other media device would. You can find these in any tech store. I personally do not have a recommended brand. To receive over the air signal, you will also need an antenna. There are antennas optimized for receiving digital and HD signals that you can hook into your digital converter. Again, any tech store will have them. They range from inexpensive to fairly high. It really depends on what you feel your needs are for the antenna. For any other questions, refer to this link, it explains the digital switch and troubleshooting for outfitting your TV for digital signals. http://www.dtv.gov/ Hope this helps.
