What channels are clear qam?

How come you cannot receive local hd channels with basic cable on a hdtv that has a qam tuner ?

  • if i hook up my hdtv to my cable line i get all my basic cable channels plus a lot of digital channels all in 480p.even the ones that should be in 1080p. though if i unhook my cable line and hook up my digital converter box i get all my local hd channels at 720p to 1080p and digital channels. but lose all my basic cable channels. whats the deal?

  • Answer:

They make a quick buck by charging you for hd channels even if they are free over the antenna. I have two cable hook ups on my tv, this allows me to get basic dish and flip back and forth from dish to antenna. I watch a all my football in hd for FREE over the antenna.

By FCC regulation, all local broadcast channels must be carried by your cable system in their original definition (thus HD if applicable) in unencrypted form, so you should be getting them on your QAM tuner. There's no rule about cable-only channels (Discovery, etc.), so they undoubtedly won't send them in clear QAM unless you pay and pay again for their box and digital service.
