How can I improve my Freeview signal?

How can I improve the signal on my freeview box?

  • We have an aerial outside which is connected to it but I have trouble getting BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, CBBC, Five and a couple other channels and some of the signal strengths are low. The freeview box is in my room, my sister was one in her room which workd perfectly and my mum has one in her room and it is a bit better and we have sky down stairs. Can anyone please help???

Ok, I used to work for itv digital (the old paid for digital tv thru the aerial company) and now have freeview. The reason you are getting some channels and not others is that channels come through in groups, called multiplexes (or at leat they did). There used to be 6, so therefore 6 different signals you needed to pick up. Sometimes you cannot get them all. Here's some tricks I learned about getting bad signal. 1: not so much a trick, but different brands of set top boxes (STBs) pick up signal better than others depending where you are near a transmitter. (sorry no cure for this one) 2: Make sure the tv aerial goes to your STB first, and then to your VCR and tv etc.. 3: Make sure your aerial lead is in good condition with no kinks, this can cause problems strangely enough 4: keep your aerial lead away from other cables, ie the power leads, scart leads etc.. From personal experience I have sat by my tv moving the aerial lead around and this does change the signal. Even though the aerial lead is coming from a wall socket that is straight from the roof aerial it doesn't seem to matter. At my last house I had the aerial lead coming out of the wall, then I had to blu tac it in a certain position to keep signal. 5: if in doubt get a booster that you plug into the wall.

Firstly - if you are using a roof or loft aerial, move it slightly either up down left or right, because digital alignment sometimes can slightly differ than analogue. You might also want to try upgrading the aerial to a high gain aerial, or replacing its existing tired out aerial cable. Ive never had much look with signal boosters, so if you wish to try a signal booster, make sure you can get a refund (get it from argos or suchlike) so if its no improvement you can get your money back... On the analogue switch off they will be a lot more available to freeview so the coverage should increase even further.

How many Boxes are running from the outside Ariel? if you have more than 2 this could weaken the signal. Either get a second External Ariel, or get an Indoor one.You can also get yourself a signal booster. you can pick a good one up in Argos for about £30.

I have a freeview box in my room with a small ariel connected, i just move the ariel around and it will improve or decrease the picture dramatically. Mabye get yourself a cheap mini-ariel and it might sort it.

i had same problem and bought a booster which helped abit but it would still go funny in bad weather ...buy an outdoor ariel from B and Q. the big one not the normal size ariel. cost u about £30 same as a booster. comes with leads and pole and is easy to fit.(doesnt need to go on top of roof.)
