Sound problem with my TV.

Laptop/TV/Surround Sound audio problem?

  • I am playing a movie from my laptops hard drive and using the HDMI output on the laptop to run a cable to a HDMI input on the TV. My TV is connected to a surround sound system through HDMI. Here's where it gets weird. I can only get audio from the speakers on my TV. I have the surround turned on and the input source switched to TV. Any idea why I can't get surround audio? TV is Sony Bravia and Surround is Sony DAV DZ280. Laptop is Acer 5536

  • Answer:

HDMI from the surround system sends audio and video to the TV (one way). It doesn't get sound from the TV and send it back to the surround system. If your TV has a SCART out, connect it to the SCART on the back of the surround system. Unfortunately, due to copy protection, you will only get stereo, not surround sound. A surround system with HDMI inputs would have avoided this problem. That's the drawback to all-in-one surround systems. Not enough inputs.

NOt all tv's have an HDMI out if yours does not then you need to output the tv to the receiver via SPDIF (Optical Out(Fiber Optic) .

Go into your TV's audio menu. Change the sound from internal to external. Read bnlfanatic78's answer. I think he is on the right track.
