Speedometer failure in 1995 Dodge Neon - why?

  • I received a 1995 Dodge Neon from a family member when I needed a car, with the understanding that I would take care of upkeep, maintenance, repairs, etcetera. Have done regular maintenance such as tires, oil changes, air filters, spark plugs, battery replacement, battery cables replaced. However, recently (within the last 2 months) the speedometer has begun cutting out. The "check engine" light has also illuminated, but when we connect to read it gives only an "Error Read" message, no code. The clock/radio/cassette unit has always been intermittent, but since this started it seems to have no power. I have not been in any type of collision or done any major engine work on it. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong? I suspect an electrical system problem of some sort, but I'm not sure where to start looking for it.

say bud, it seems like it's running low on voltage. check the battery,and i don't think this unit has a volt meter,and check and see if the alternaor is charging,if not,the complete system is not working,because the system needs 12 volts to operate properly... or a loose connection some where in the charging system...or a connection that feeds the electrical system in the cabin. check the electrical plugs at firewall for being loose... good luck..
