Help with dodge neon brakes?

How do you replace control arm bushings on a 2000 dodge neon?

  • I have a 2000 Dodge Neon ES 5 Speed. At 65 and over miles per hour my car's steering wheel shakes rapidly usually when I go over just a little bump. I got an alignment done at Les Schwab and it still didn't help. I took it to Midas and they said the lower control arm bushings need to be replaced but it's a 450 dollar job there. They look very worn out like the mechanic pointed out. I looked at my Haynes manual but only shows how to remove the whole control arm which requires a lot of steps of taking the wheel off, brakes, motor mount, bolts, etc. The lower control arm bushing only has one long bolt that is aimed upwards and easy to undo. I took out the bolt but I was afraid I didn't know what i was doing so I put it back in tight. I was wondering if I need a press to just knock it out and put the new bushings in I got from Auto Zone? Or do I really need to go through the Manuals steps? Please, if you have link references let me know because I've been trying to find some, thanks. I like to work on cars but I've only replaced radiators, starter motors, hoses, spark plugs, batteries, mufflers, etc. So What do I do?

  • Answer:

You'd remove the lower control arm and I assume you have a press. You simply press the old bushings out and press the new ones in, either that or get a control arm sold as an assembly, dont forget to get it aligned afterwards.
