Why is my Malfunction Indicator Light on?

I drive an 04 Dodge Neon SXT. Why is my "malfunction indicator" light coming on?

  • It just came on today when I restarted my car AFTER I had accidentally turned it off with my keys while it was still in drive. I put in park, ran in to get what I forgot, came back out and that light was on. It's not flashing. My tank is full. My gas cap is secure. I'm just now noticing it and it's possible that it has been on but I really think I would have noticed it before.

Like the previous poster advised bring it to an auto parts house that can scan the code. They will NOT be able to tell you exactly what is wrong rather this is a common misconception. It will only tell you which electrical circuit is affected and this is where you will start to look for your problem. Usually it will be the sensor/switch/circuit as indicated by a scanner, but it will take a more in depth scan by a shop computer. These computers, the DRB III used at a Dodge dealership for example, will be able to test the sensor/switch/circuit on the car. On Chrysler, Plymouth, and Dodge vehicles starting with the year 2000 you can usually get the code yourself. Just turn the ignition key off-on-off-on-off-on within 5 seconds and a code should show on your odometer. Then Google "Dodge Neon trouble code ______" and it should bring you to a website that will tell you what the code is for. Good luck

That incident may have been a coincidence. It is probably emissions related. Take it to AutoZone (or whatever auto parts store you have in your area) and have them use the code check computer. (Most do it for free). They will be able to tell you specifically what the problem is. My guess is oxygen sensor.

No Chance Without Bernoulli

The simplest thing to check is the gasoline cover, make sure it's on tight, especially if you've fueled recently. Give it a day or two and if it is still on, it probably has something to do with the fuel or emissions systems. =~)
