Income-- Park Slope, Brooklyn?
-
Can you live on $5,500 per month (which is like $66,000 income per year) in Park Slope, Brooklyn? Its just my husband my 1 yr. old daughter and I. We will be renting an apartment. We are hoping to make $80,000 combined but the estimate above is just the worst case scenario.

Answer:
The federal government recommends that families pay no more than 30% of their income for rent. Plenty of folks in New York are paying more, but it is likely to put a squeeze on your spending for everything else if you get up into rents above $2000. Do you already have an apartment lined up? If not, go on Craigslist and look at prices. It sounds to me like this is most likely to work if you go to the fringes of Park Slope...such as between 16th and 20th streets, or between 4th and 5th avenues...where rents are still high, but not as horrific as in the trendy parts of the Slope.

I think its totally possible. Even though most people consider Park Slope one of the more expensive areas in Bklyn, it is do-able if you are renting. Expect rent to be about $2500/mo for a nice one bedroom. There are lots of garden apartments that would be nice for a family. Many of the couples with young kids that I know have the baby in a bed/crib in the living room, or share the bedroom. Cost of living is a bit higher because the shops, restaurants, specialty shops and groceries are on the higher end. The great thing is that once your daughter is school age, Park Slope is in a GREAT public school district and the area is VERY family friendly. Moms and strollers are everywhere. Childcare (after rent and living expenses) will be a bit expensive because day care and nannies are pricey everywhere in new york, but you will be able to manage. Expect to cook at home alot, take the trains and subways everywhere. Don't keep a car since it's so convenient.

Yup, thats very doable. There are still plent of apartments that are under 1500 a month and you can find some even under 1200.

Park Slope has become pricey in the last 10 years. Those walk up brownstones are now selling for more than a million dollars. For the money you are saying, you could find a really nice apartment on Ocean Avenue in a really nice neighborhood. Park Slope has gone the route of the well to do.
