Where to stay in Maui?
-
Where should we stay on Maui? I know I want to go to the West Coast. I guess a car is needed? How is the traffic and the driving? We were in Waikiki last March and I did not have a car because we could walk everywhere we wanted to go besides the fact there is no place to park. We love to snorkel, and walk the beach and would like to be close to some sort of night life. Not a bar scene but some stores a small town. I do not know much about Maui but it seems to be more lush and tropical than Waikiki. Any info would be great. thanks in advance

Ok, you very smart to go Maui, cause in Hawaii eva body know, Maui na ka oi, yeah? That mean Maui the best, ok? You might like Kaanapali/ Lahaina part of Maui, ok? It the west coast, you can see Island of Lanai, and Molokai, even take ferry to both if you want, also Kaanapali Beach very nice, also has Black Rock, very good snorkel place, too. Lahaina town old whaling village, now shops, restaurants and bar too, ok? You can walk in shops too, very nice for tourist and local alike, ok? You can find room in all budget that side of island, just go online to Kaanapali Hotels, you gonna see what I mean, ok? Have great time in Hawaii, were eva you decide to go, ok? Peace and aloha to you

I agree... Lahaina or Kihei... but you would probably like Lahaina better. The town is small to walk around but you would probably need a rental car for sightseeing. They also have Harley Davidson rentals in Lahaina, if you're a biker. The roads are curvy and can take a while going from town to town. In town, it's just like a small town and can easily navigate.

I'm with Kono on Kaanapali. I like the Sheraton. It's not the newest, or the fanciest, but I love the location. It's built right onto Black Rock & it is very beautiful. Lahaina will have some nightlife & it is a short drive away.

Definitely agree with Kono and Boomer Gal, Kaanapali is what you want, with its long, walkable pedestrian beach paths and proximity both to its own little shopping village and historic Lahaina town with shopping, restaurants and some nightlife nearby. In terms of Maui being more lush and tropical, each island has a "wet" side and a 'dry" side. The tradewinds almost always blow from the same direction when they hit the islands ("windward" side) and that is the side with all the rain (and humidity) and very lush and green. Honolulu/Waikiki and Lahaina/Kaanapali are both on the drier "leeward" side of the island... when you think about it, it allows tourists (and locals) to have a better chance of a dry day. You will want to rent a car on Maui on the days you want to do anything but sit on Kaanapali Beach. Kaanapali and all the largest Maui resort locations (except Hana) are artificial planned resort communities with a string of hotels, condos, golfing areas and perhaps a large shopping center, but not much else. Even walking to Lahaina if it is a warm day from Kaanapali is a bit painful without a car. And you definitely will want a car to drive the road through the jungle to Hana (an all day trip), drive up to the summit of the volcano Haleakala, drive to snorkeling locations off Kihei/Wailea/Makena beaches and Napili Bay and drive to Iao Needle, or perhaps to that isolated tropical beach! There are very few roads on Maui, and although the population is not that high the roads can be choked with stop-and-go tourist traffic in season so plan accordingly when driving back to the airport.
