What's it like to be a travel agent?

Whats the best way to find a cheap flight last minute? Travel agent or do it yourself?

  • i don't know anything about booking a plane ticket. What's the best way to get a cheap flight? Is it with a travel agent or is it cheaper to find online at say priceline? I did notice that priceline seems to be just for standby with a car for the one we found that was cheapest. Would rather not standby. Thanks to those who know about this stuff and are helping me out.

    You can't usually find a cheap last-minute flight to anywhere. Airlines typically offer a cheaper fare months ahead of the travel date, on just a few seats, to attract business. Once those seats are sold, the price goes up. And if they manage to fill enough of the plane to make the flight profitable, they have no reason to offer the remaining seats at a discount. In fact, if a person wants one of those remaining seats badly enough, he/she will usually be willing to pay the jacked-up price. If you want to know what the best price is, simply check on Expedia's website, or call a travel agent and ask them to find out for you. You're not under any obligation to make a reservation.

You don't say where you are flying from/to? almost every country has some form of budget airline but that isn't always the best option. The other post is correct, the buying of a cheap last minute deal is a lottery. There are many travel companies who are online, Expedia, Travelbag, dial-a-flight, Trailfinders. Any of these should be able to give you a clearer insight to the pricing structure and late availability deals on offer. And don't forget the airlines own websites as they too often have late booking deals. Good luck.

Cheap and last minute do not go hand in hand with air travel. And you cannot purchase standby air tickets anymore. Priceline may be cheaper but you will find that you will have several layovers as well as changing planes/carriers. You also have no control over what time you arrive. Looking online or a travel agent would be your best options.
