Answer:
I agree with the advice on Spanish. Just about everybody uses Usted, not tu. Adults even call children by Usted. As far as safety, CR (especially San Jose) has become unsafe. Those who claim that it is safe are dillusional. It is not 1995, it's 2010. Things have changed. In San Jose, if you choose to go out after dark (~6pm), use a taxi, even if only for a couple of blocks. As bad as the recession is here, it's worse there. Desperate times. Try to be with at least 1 other person at all times. During the day, it's mostly pickpocketing, but at night the real criminals come out. Take common sense precautions. No jewelry AT ALL. Don't even take it with you, leave it all at home. No flashing cash in public, only carry a few dollars that you'll need for the next day or two. Things like Ipods, MP3 players, laptops, digital cameras, and digital anything are in high demand.

Just returned from Costa Rica after 3 years. Costa Rican spanish is very formal, they will always use usted when talking never tu, that was different. Hand and facial gestures are used for direction and pointing they do not use their hand like Americans. This is done more so by Nicaraguans living in Costa Rica, then tico's (Costa Rican people) San Jose is a wonderful place, safe for the most part. When you go out at night go in groups and don't go of with unknown locals. Life in San Jose is like any other major city in the world, so use common sense. Most ticos speak english and are eager to speak it. The food is bland and consist of rice, black beans and fried bananas (typical) but all the american restaurant chains are everywhere. Food/eating out is expensive, the water is good to drink. You should have no problems. Veritas is located in a subburb of San Jose and can be easily accessed by bus. The bus system is very reliable and cheap. Your host family will most likely be very protective and you will have house rules, have a calling cart to use their home phone. You will have lots of fun, Jaco (surfing beach) Manuel Antonio beach is beautiful. Do not waste your money visiting the vulcan Irazu but do go to vucan Poaz. Porto Viejo is very popular as is Bocca de Torro in Panama. Have a great time. Pura vida!
