Where to stay in Bali given we're in our 50's?
-
My husband and I have an opportunity to go to Bali early to mid January 2010 without any kids and want to know the best area to stay? Obviously at our age we're not into night clubs, noisy bars and partying until the we hours so obviously Kuta is out. We love markets, temples, gentle walks along beeches and in parks and the obvious touristy things that you do when visiting other countries. So can anyone please advise us as to where would be the best place to stay in Bali?

Answer:
You mentioned that you 'd love to be close to the market and able to walk along the beach well Kuta still one the best place to stay with easy access to many places. I might suggest you The Santika Premiere(close to Bali Water Bom, access to the beach tough the hotel's part not swimable, very nice garden), Kartika Plaza Discovery(direct access to the beach, adjacent to shopping mall), Kuta Paradiso(direct beach access, close to shops, markets and restaurants) Alam KulKul (the beach is across the street , great al fresco dining(italian cuisine),located at the end of Kuta Beach and this is the quieter part, far from the hustle and bustle of Kuta/ Legian). In Nusa Dua/ Tanjung Benoa area there are lots of great resorts from Conrad to Novotel, most hotels has their own beach area, and very quiet, but access to many attractions are pretty far, you'll need taxi to go from one point to another. If you want to have exclusive and secluded atmosphere, try the hotels along Jimbaran, one of the most praised is The Intercontinental Resort. For even superb luxury try the Uluwatu area, the Bvlgari resort is one of the occupants. Parks and famous Temples are outside the Kuta area and no matter where you'd stay, none of them reachable by foot, so make sure you arrange your transport.

For temples and parks Ubud is the obvious choice- there are lots of nice cafes there and it's well known as the arts centre so lots of paintings and local crafts. If you want to be on the coast, Sanur is a fantastic place to stay- easily accessible from the airport, is easy to travel in and out of to visit temples such as Tanah Lot and not too far from Kuta or Legian if you want to do some more serious shopping in the markets! Sanur has some great hotels right on the beach and there are plenty of markets there as well as some nice restaurants and bars. In the evening it's much quieter than Kuta partly because it's not a surfing resort. Seminyak has some great areas that are quieter and a bit further away from the clubs and bars and again it's easy to get to the markets for shopping. As long as you don't stay right in the centre of Kuta, it's pretty easy to find quiet areas in most of the towns. However, my favourite has to be Sanur- quiet, relaxing and friendly.
