Shanghai or Hong Kong - which city is better to visit for a tourist?
-
I spent 11 days in Beijing last year, so I guess from a tourist perspective I have done Beijing fairly throughly, I would like to visit another city/area of China, and am stuck between Shanghai and Hong Kong. Obviously, I guess touring is another option, but I've never been a fan of flying around loads of different places in a short amount of time, I prefer to spend a decent amount of time in one place. However, having said that, I was starting to get a bit bored of Beijing towards the end of the 11 days. It's a nice city to visit, but after you've done the main attractions and got over the initial culture shock, I didn't find it a terrribly exciting city. IMO, it's a bit bland. So, the question basically is, out of HK and Shanghai, which city/area do you feel you could most easily spend 7 to 10 days in without getting bored? Thanks

Answer:
Hongkong is an exciting city while 7-10 days is a little bit long and you will get bored at the last days. A 5 days Hong kong tour is enough for you to view the best of the city. I recommend Shanghai and nearby water towns Suzhou or Hangzhou, and the spectacular mountain Huangshan, which you can go there from Shanghai by overnight train. what to see in Shanghai, http://www.easytourchina.com/shanghai/index.htm Varied Shanghai Travel Ideas, http://www.chinafacttours.com/tours/shanghai/

HK is a beautiful city known for its great shopping and cool cruises of Victoria Harbor. Disney and Ocean Park are its best known tourist attractions. There are always huge trade shows going on at the convention center in Wan Chai. With the proper citizenship and/or visas you may easily visit nearby Macao and Shenzhen too, as they are both only one hour away. Shanghai is vastly larger than HK in both population (18 million vs. 7 million) and geographic area. The Pearl Tower, Shanghai Financial Tower, and The Bund are its best known tourist spots. Shanghai also has tons of high end shopping on Nanjing and Hui Hai Roads. Numerous museums, resorts, zoos, and aquariums keep visitors busy. HK and Shanghai are both great destinations. I would suggest Shanghai as the slightly better choice only because it is larger and therefore has more destinations or interest. Another option would be to spend half of your trip in each city. They are only 2.5 hours apart by air. If you struggled with language during your trip to Beijing, then that is a consideration. Shanghai will have a similar percentage of English speakers as Beijing, but in HK everyone speaks basic English and most people speak excellent English.

I would spend 4 days in Hong Kong and 3 days in Macau. If you are looking for shopping bargains...forget it, the shops are basically high end products with price tags to suit. The markets are typical, same tshirts etc etc. Food is basically cheap, but if you drink lots of coffee, it was very expensive, was cheaper sometimes to drink cocktails...lol Macau is a gambling city, shuttle buses from one casino to the other, but it was worth a look. Food was great, and the market areas were interesting. Just a word of warning re Macau ...if you are a non smoker, smoking is allowed in a lot of establishments, can be smelly.

I couldn't help but notice that you also asked if you would be able to use Mandarin in Hong Kong. Because of this, I would suggest Shanghai if your goal is to practice the Mandarin you are trying to learn. However, looking at other facts I would recommend that you travel to Hong Kong. Like others have said, Macau is just a one hour ferry ride away allowing quick and easy access to both Hong Kong and Macau. I have been to Hong Kong several times and feel that you could easily spend 7 days there and find interesting things to do for all 7 days. Be sure to check out historical points of interest such as Kowloon Walled City Park. Have fun!

In my opinion, the tourist resorts in both shanghai and HK are less than that of beijings, no matter which one you choose, you will get bored in the last days. However, there are lots of tourist destination nearby shanghai, such as hangzhou, suzhou, xitang, luzhi, even nanjing and yangzhou. They represent jiangnan culture of china, and these places are not far away among one another. So I think shanghai is better.
