  • Answer:

Yes, I know the Xiao Long Bao... a little too well. Basically, to find Xiao Long Bao, you need to go to Shanghai Cuisine restaurants, because it is a local specialty. Some mixed-Chinese cuisine restaurant have it too. The most famous place for Xiao Long Bao in Shanghai is Nanxiang Mantou (mantou is also a kind of bun). It's located at Yu Yuan (Yu Gardens), at 85 Yuyuan Lu (near the Jiuqu Bridge). It's crowded and touristy over there, but they have a variety of xiao long bao... they have normal small ones, but they even offer huge xiao long baos that you can suck out some of what's inside with a straw!! You can also try some of the following best Shanghai-Food restaurants in the city (I'll give you the phone numbers, and you can call and get exact addresses): > Crystal Jade - one of my favourite restaurants in Shanghai. they have Shanghainese, cantonese and other cuisines. Very fresh xiao long bao (and good la mian noodles). There's a branch in Xintiandi (on 2nd floor of mall). Deeeelicious xiao long bao. (te: 6385-8752) > Jade Garden - higher class decor (tel: 5058-6088) > Lulu Restaurant - it's a very popular chain of Shanghai restaurants. (tel: 6288-1179) > Xiao Nan Guo - also very famous chain of restaurants in Shanghai. (tel: 3208-9777) Mei Long Zhen - it has Shanghai and Sichuan cuisine (it's been around for about 60 years. The dining room is traditionally Chinese. with wood and marble furniture (tel: 6245-7777) > Old Railway Station Restaurant - in Xujiahui. As the name suggests... it was the old railway station. It's actually quite a lovely building. You can even dine on a train. And if not on the train, other tables have a view of a train. Nice atmosphere for some xiao long bao! (tel: 6427-2233) > Chun - tiny, unremarkable decor, but good xiao long bao! Near Maoming Lu. (tel: 6256-0301) > 1221 Restaurant (tel: 6213-6585) > Pauls - sounds Western, but it's Chinese (tel: 6279-2827) > Red Door - no-MSG Shanghainese restaurant. (tel: 6299-8766) > Shanghai Uncle - a chain (tel: 6339-1977) > Whampoa Club - upscale restaurant by the Bund in 3 on the Bund (5th Floor). Shanghainese, but with a modern twist. (tel: 6321-3737) > Ye Shanghai - lovely decor in Xintiandi. Not inexpensive, but good quality food. (tel: 6311-2323) > Yin - new, modern, pretty good quality Shanghai cuisine. Near Plaza 66. (tel: 5466-5070) > Gui Hua Lou - High-end! Shanghai, Sichuan and Cantonese food in Pudong Shangri-La Hotel. (tel: 5888-3697) I hope that list will satisfy your xiao long bao cravings....
