Is censorship in Saudi Arabia stricter than China?
-
My instincts are saying it is because it is a theocratic absolute monarchy that cut the heads off of gay people (both Saudi citizens and foreigners) and virtually no freedom of religion. Also, which one of these would most likely get me (as a male foreigner from United States) the death penalty (because I heard Saudi Arabia uses death penalty a lot of various reasons): 1) being gay 2) kissing my girlfriend (even though I don't have one) 3) bringing religious materials into the country other than Islam 4) bringing ANY Japanese anime and manga into the country (particularly yaoi/yuri genre that have homosexual themes). Also, I heard the Pokemon franchise is banned in Saudi Arabia claiming to be blasphemous towards the Muslim doctrine. 5) bringing any secular media or Muslim works that are not in the Wahabbi POV or media from different cultures. 6) talking to a woman 7) bringing anything that shows Israel in the map 8) playing video games 9) watching my favorite anime shows in Youtube (i.e. Lucky Star) 10) entering Mecca or Medina 11) taking photos of my friends or bringing a teddy bear 12) swearing in public 13) reading books from different philosophers I was thinking that if I were to go anywhere in the Middle East for vacation, I was thinking of UAE. I heard dress codes (particularly for women) and laws in the UAE isn't as harsh and more relaxed when compared to Saudi Arabia.

Answer:
China only cares about power. As long as you're no danger to the government they really don't care what you do. You can ready any book you like, visit prostitutes (or be one), etc. etc. SA cares more about controlling how you live your life - which is a very different matter and very likely to results in more strict enforcement.

if you are gay, they more than likely will deport you out of the country.. We saudis dont go about popping off heads like you think.. if you are caught kissing your girlfriend, you and her will be picked up by the religious police group and will be held in jail a few days and probably flogged in public.. its the embarrassment factor they are hoping for with the public flogging. you might get away with bringing religious material into the country if you dont openly flaunt it.. There are many of my christian friends here who have bibles and religious works and no one took it from them at the customs points of entry. And they even are allowed to hold their christian bible meetings in the privacy of their own homes in groups as long as no one is out publically propogating their faith to the muslims My son and many others here LOVE anime and watch it constantly.. The kids trade anime CD's at school. having said this.. yes anime porn as any porn is banned, but normal anime is fine.. pokemon was very popular here 15years ago in its heyday.. its just that the fad died down and no one cares about it anymore.. my son still watched pokemon reruns on TV here and he still plays with his pokemon figurines at times you can talk to a women if its business, but no flirting we are aware that Israel is out there, we just like to make it out that we dont recognize it as a legal country, but yes there are maps here that have Israel on it.. in fact all do.. You can go to any bookstore and see it.. video games are the IN thing here.. my son, daughter, husband, friends. we all play video.. playstation 3 or xbox is the THING lately.. you can watch youtube.. some things like porn are blocked, some not you can enter mecca if you are a muslim.. you have no business there if you are not.. cause what would a non muslim want to do in mecca? gawk at the pilgrams making their religious rites? thats the whole purpose you dont need to be there.. you can take as many photos of your friends as you want till your camera breaks.. and teddy bears fill up our toy stores out the wazoo.. you cannot take photos of woman outside, its sensative.. but you are welcome to take photos of personal friends and of landmark things and places people swear like dogs in public.. looooooooooool.. you will hear it everwhere, but majority try to control themselves we have many many different books here by many different philosophers.. our bookstores are filled with them.. I personally dont know who you've been brainwashed by to think otherwise, but we generally are a normal functioning country, thats just a bit more moral than the west, but we do normal things..
