Anyone know any good exercises for the butterfly stroke?
-
I'm terrible at swimming butterfly, but with the help of a friend, I managed to get the rhythm down. Now I need to get a little stronger so that the stroke becomes easier to do. Which muscles are used in butterfly, and what are some good exercises to strengthen them? (I already know that the abdominal muscles are most important.) I'm looking for land exercises like push-ups or something, not drills for the water.

Answer:
anything that works your triceps, lats, pecs, and back. Butterfly is exhausting and is primarily upper body. push-ups... both regular and diamond cutter, dips, lat pull downs, stretch cords

Yeah, lateral pulls are a good idea. You're correct many push-ups are also a good idea. Most people do push-ups while placing there hands just outside of their shoulders. While doing the butterfly you're pushing yourself up in the water with your palms down using water resistance to our hands and your arms are extended. Place your hands farther apart. This will make the push-ups more difficult and force you to use more of your shoulders and triceps to lift yourself from the floor. Make sure your back is stiff during the push-ups. See if you can do 10 at the moment or do as many as you can and start increasing as much as possible every day. Since you're not weight lifting for this excerise you should be able to increase somewhat every day the number of push-ups. When you get to 50 which the average girl can't do I would think you'll see a major difference. When doing the butterfly surely you're using shoulder muscles like in push-ups. For the butterfly, I wouldn't make the statement that abdominal muscles are 'most important', only important because you're using them to raise your torso during the stroke. You're probably also using your lower back muscles during the butterfly strokes. You could drape/brace yourself at the waiste face down and do sort of 'reverse sit-ups' to strengthen your lower back. You could also lay on a bench press bench and with your arms extended straight out paralell to the floor and perpendicular to your torso, holding perhaps 5 pound dumb bells in each hand lower your arms down perhaps 60 degrees and then raise them back to paralell to the floor and repeat this excercise as many times as you can. Rest for a moment and do it again. Two days later repeat this excercise at least three times a week. You could vary this excercise in mimicking the butterfly stroke. This will definitely use the same muscles you use during the butterfly stroke. The butterfly is a very aerobic exercise. You should try jogging or cycling to increase your staminance.

Dry land will do a small part in performance help. You need to strenghten your core (tummy) muscles. The best way to do this is to kick a lot of dolphin kicks on your back with fins on. This will help you "feel" the water and make the core muscles stronger at the same time. It will take time but the kicking on your back is the FASTEST way to get better in the butterfly stroke.

personally, i've done a lot of butterfly and i find the best one (however hard it can be) start of just standing on ur hands against a wall, once u can do that do sort of upside down press ups if u get what i mean, stand on ur hands (against a wall 2 start with) and bend ur elbows, then push urself back up. once u can do this easily, move away from the wall and do more, getting faster as u get better. don't worry. its not meant 2 be easy. also, you're going to have 2 practice a lot. when i first started doing butterfly ten years ago (i was 6, i am now 16 and have *cough* a few awards*) i swam about 6-8 hours a day (i still do out of habit) who knows, maybe i'll meet you in a competition one day! good luck!

lats... and shoulders... also triceps. the best way to get faster at butterfly is to swim butterfly. instead of going to the gym (which is good too) go to the pool or lake and practice. esp. work on distance because that will ultimately make you faster, than if you swims sprints.
