Whats the best way to start getting involved in swimming competitions?

Im 20 years old and really enjoy swimming for lesuire, have been doing it for a very long time now and thought it would be fun to start competition swimming. where should i go? do i have to join a club or is there open events were anyone can go, no matter what is ur ability?

Answer:
at most swim clubs they offer a team for anyone out of college called masters. there is one at my swim club and a lot of people swim in it. everyone in it is at a different level, but it doesnt matter. there are also master swim meets where master swimmers can swim because normal swim meets dont allow 20 yrs olds.
