I need help with swim training.

Swimsuit help for swim team?

  • I'm a boy, and I need help figuring out how to know what size suit I should get for training and also for meets on swim team. I'm about a 30" waist normally, and didn't know how to figure out how tight I need to get them? I've been told if you can pull it on easily it isn't tight enough..is that true?

  • Answer:

The "rule of thumb" is to go one size up for practice - which would be a 32". And one size down for competition - which would be a 28" You are correct, a racing suit should be snug, and should be a bit of a struggle to get on.

if you don't want a swimsuit to be too tight or too loose then get one with a elastic band or adjustable waist band

Good question, I have the same waist size as you. I usually train in an actual Speedo swimsuit shorts, with mesh inside and draw string tie, for resistance and comfort. Wearing the jammers daily can be uncomfortable. Swim competitions I usually use the 28" jammer for all my events. But I have a friend who goes with 30" for breaststroke because he feels he loses flexibility on his whip kick in the 28", but he then uses the 28" for his other events. I say buy a 30" see how it feels in practice, if its tight then save if for races, if its lose train in it and then test out the 28".
