How do you mentally train for swimming?

IT said in order to be a dedicated swimmer you have to go to all practices and work hard, have good nutrition, strength and flexibility training and mental training. How do you mentally train for swimming?

I dont know what that guy above me is saying by dolphin suit. When it comes to swimming, what seperates you from the rest is your mental capability. Every swimmer has gone through trainer. it is how you use it is what makes you fast. Music is on the list for every swimmer i think. That gets you pumped up. Dont sit around waiting for your event, walk around, joke with friends, loosen up to prevent your warm-up from wearing out. at the block, dont compare yourself to the other swimmers, focus on you and you only, cause in the end, your race is determined by your time and your time only, place does not matter (unless it is for high school or college). Pump up your self-esteem, give yourself a goal time for you to achieve, and when you get in the water, get angry and powered up. i am sorry but there is really no way for me to tell you how to prepare. Only you know what you need. Visualize your race and determine every thing before hand, strategy is key in swimming. Good luck!

I've been reading this book by Michael Phelps for awhile called "No Limits: The Will to Succeed". As a newly competitive swimmer, I have found it very interesting and helpful. For example, here's a quote from his book that deals with what you're asking: "They say that the mental aspect of sports is just as important as the physical part. There can be no doubt about that: Being mentally tough is critical. At an Olympic final, you know everybody has physical talent. So, who's going to win? The menally toughest." And here's another quote from his book that can help you mentally train for a swim meet: "I can visualize how I want the perfect race to go. I can see the start, the strokes, the walls, the turns, the finish, the strategy, all of it. It's so vivid that I can vividly see incredible detail, down even to the wake behind me. . . . Visualizing like this is like programming a race in my head, and that programming sometimes seems to make it happen just as I had imagined it." I suggest you buy the book if you take your sport seriously.

Swimming is, in fact, 95% psychological. To mentally prepare for swimming, a minimum of 2-3 hours in a dolphin suit is mandatory. This regimen should be repeated twice weekly, until the swimmer feels he/she is ready to enter the water. Glad I could help! =D

watch the olympics, watch others swim, think positive and believe in your self. For me, I think of a word and spell it out. For instance, in swimming districts last year, the water was like 60 degress and the air 50. so i was swimming a 200 freestyle and for every 25, i spelled out i-t-i-s-c-o-l-d. trust me it helps you focus

Before the meet i relax depending on if its after school or an a weekend the relaxing time will be different. I just try to keep myself calm, when i get nervous i always do worse. During the meet i listen to music, that helps to get pumped up. Before my race i do a little ritual, jump up and down, stretch my arms. I no someone else who prays before every race. Sometimes i try and focus on the water and try and drown out all the noise to keep myself calm.
