Will swimming help with weight loss?

  • Hi, i don't want diet plans, i don't want exercise regimes, i don't want "eat this, do that" etc etc etc.....and i DONT WANT ACAI BERRY!! I just want some sound advice. Would 20 minutes swimming 3/4 mornings a week before breakfast/work help with fitness and help to lose weight along with a sensible diet? Thank you ps....i am SICK of running, my knees are in bits from it. Want to lose 20 pounds.

  • Answer:

As other replies have said, to lose weight, exercise and diet go hand in glove. However, swimming 20 minutes will do almost nothing for you. You likely already know that to lose one pound of fat, you must use 3500 calories MORE than you eat. In swimming, the simple guideline is that you use ONE CALORIE TO SWIM 3 YARDS/meters. So, to lose one pound of fat, you must swim approximately 10,500 yards. If you are considering swimming 20 minutes, my guess is that you are not a highly experienced swimmer and, therefore, would have great difficulty swimming even 1000 yards. But, let's assume that you can. Therefore, it would take you 11 days of swimming to lose just one pound and that would occur ONLY if you didn't increase your caloric intake. Swimming 3 to 4 days per week would then take you at the least 3 weeks to lose one pound. So ... It will be important that you swim for longer than 20 minutes. In addition, 20 minutes of exercise will not improve your level of conditioning. To improve your conditioning, you must exercise for a MINIMUM of 45 minutes with a heart rate elevated to 60-80% of your maximum (max HR is crudely determined by subtracting your age from 220).

Yes, of course swimming as you describe will help with weight loss. You seem to already know how it works, burn more calories than you take in and you will lose weight, up to a point. the body will eventually start doing some marvelous, but maybe frustrating things like going into starvation mode and foil your weight loss, but at first you will certainly lose weight. And by the way, many doctors recommend swimming over running for the reasons you have said--it is far less stressful on the knees, feet and legs. Have fun and good luck.

Eclectic

Swimming is a good activity, and if you train for speed and endurance it may help to lose weight. But it must be accompanied by proper diet.

Yes of course it will but u have to swim alot more than 20 min. a week. And u say u don't want an exercise regiment, but if I'm not mistaken 20 min. a week is a routine in itself,so basically if u want to lose weight swimming u Have to have a exercise regiment and put forth a lil more effort on the time that u swim.Slowly build yourself up n before u know it you'll be able to do 30-45 min. Swims, look for 4 to 5 times out of the week n if u have time, everyday.

I agree with eclectic That being said, if you can, you should swim for about 30 minutes. A couple of years ago, I went to the swimming pool for about 2 months and it really started to show. By the way, you should be careful with your diet as swimmming, contrary to running, really makes you hungry! So if you eat breakfast afterwards, try to eat as usual (or better, if your breakfast was not healthy). A lot of people put on weight after starting swimming (there were studies on that subject).

Offkey

It can help with weight loss, but my experience with swimming early in the day is that it made me RAVENOUSLY hungry. I suppose it depends on your blood sugar ups-n-downs. If you can swim in the mornings and not feel hungrier, do it! Swimming at night always worked best for me; I was asleep through the ravenous times! BTW, "ACADEMIC" answerer above is INCORRECT. If you have a modest diet, and swim for 20 minutes, you WILL LOSE WEIGHT, and it will be the permanant way, SLOWLY. Do not do huge, marathon-style workouts! YOU WILL BE INSANE WITH HUNGER, trust me! Any weight-loss plan that ENHANCES hunger will fail. If you do an overload workout, do it later at night.... 'Hope that helps!
