How can improve my sprinting?

How can I improve my sprinting kick?

  • I have one of the fastest kicks on my swim team when we use kick boards, but I have trouble applying it to the swimming and strengthening it there. I use a shoulder driven freestyle technique where most of the power is in the pull, but still think I can always improve the kick. What I don't understand is how people like Wu Peng can kick a 28 sec LCM 50? HOW in the world they are able to do it and what did they do to get it that fast?

  • Answer:

The more you kick, the better your kick will become. Its not rocket science. The more your train the better you will be. Leg ext. and leg curls will help your leg strength but kicking sprints in the pool will help you the most. Its normal to have a shoulder driven freestyle but if your a sprinter, kicking is oh so important because it contributes around 25% to your speed in a sprint. When your swimming a sprint set focus on the kick. Kick as you would using a kickboard. A good way to see if your actually sprinting is to see whether your kicking fast enough. Something that helped my freestyle kick was to swim a lot of backstroke because most of the time backstrokers have a weak pull and a stronger kick in comparison to free swimmers and it seemed like I kicked more in backstroke.

I think I understand your problem, we have a kid similar to you on our team, he can kick really bloody fast with a board, but can't apply it in his stroke. the best way to get good at this is to work on timing your kick with your pull, and focus on doing fast legs and slow arms, even if it means slowing down for a little while. while kicking disproportionally fast with a slow pull your egs will become more used to kicking harder, and when you later try to speed your arms back up, your legs will follow.

I had a friend who was one of the fastest kickers in the world in his day and it was still pretty amazing to watch swim/kick 20 years after his time. Oddly enough he said the reason he could kick so fast was because his parents made him take tap dance lessons. It might sound strange but be had a world record to prove it so it might be worth a try.
