How should I prepare for Lifeguard Training?

Lifeguard workout?

  • I might work as a lifeguard this summer, and while I'm a strong swimmer, I'd like to improve as much as possible. I feel like this is an important job, so I should be as fit and strong as possible, in case of emergency. What kinds of exercises should I do to prepare for that? Also, if you have been a lifeguard, what is lifeguard training like and what did you have to do to become a lifeguard at your pool? Thanks so much

Hello. I was a Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor for more than 30 years. If you are talking Pool Lifeguard then your training regimen should consist of at least 1,000 yards three or more times a week, with a combination of sprints plus a 500 yard continuous swim. You might want to also practice retrieving a 10 pound weight from a 9 foot depth, using one of the standard 'surface dive' techniques, as well as a feet first descent. If you are talking Surf Beach Lifeguard, double or triple the above distances, make it 5 days a week, and add in some running (again both wind-sprints and endurance runs). The best exercise for Lifeguarding is swimming, but any kind of physical activity that keeps you active and builds general fitness is good. Team sports, tennis, jogging, weight training. It all helps, but swimming should be your primary focus. Most Pool Lifeguard Certification classes require you to be able to swim 500 yards continuously and retrieve a 10 pound weight from a depth of 9 feet or more. It is quite helpful if you can swim front crawl, breastroke, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke. And tread water. Many Pools start hiring in March and April. Certification classes have already started and should be available now and during the next three months. Call the Pool or the people that run the pool and find out what training they recommend. If you take American Red Cross training, the Lifeguard course includes CPR and First Aid. I believe the Ellis & Assoc. course does also. Otherwise you may have to take those courses seperately. It doesn't hurt your chances at getting hired to have Advanced First Aid certification, too! Certification classes are often available from your local Red Cross Chapter, YMCA, or Parks & Recreation Department. Sometimes from Community Colleges and sometimes from Regional Occupation Programs or other job training organizations. There will surely be several to choose from almost anywhere you live. Good Luck! Lifeguarding is a great job. There are often shortages of Lifeguards and Swim Instructors so it is usually possible to find seasonal work with little difficulty!
