How do you get rid of a foot cramp?

Whenever I swim I get really bad cramp in my toe/foot?

  • I used to swim, and I remember getting it then, but I've recently started again, and it's so bad that when I get it I literally can't swim anymore, how can I prevent it, or at least help to make it a bit better? Thank you!

  • Answer:

eat more sodium/potassium. make sure you stretch your calves and ankles out before you start swimming. when you feel it coming on, stop on the wall and pull your toes back towards your body. if that doesnt help, rub out the bottom of your foot while trying to pull it back. after you get back in it is very likely he cramp will come back. repeat the same thing. after the workout make sure you rub out & stretch the muscle that was cramping.. to try and prevent it from happening maybe let your foot relax while your swimming and dont actively concentrate on pointing your toes.

Well, the best way to prevent it is to not swim

Since you've recently started back swimming, I would definately stretch before and after you swim. Cramping after a workout could be a sign of dehydration or a depletion of calcium. I used to get cramps really bad in my calves because I didn't have enough electrolytes. When you swim, try drinking gatorade or something with electrolytes. If Gatorade is too sweet (bc for me it was), i would just add some water to it. You definately have to stay hydrated while swimming, even though you're not sweating, because you are using all your muscles and your body has to work hard to keep the core temp regulated which can take alot of energy and can deplete you of electrolytes quickly.

It's called a charlie horse! I used to get those a lot when I used to swim on a swim team. I'm not sure what to do except to rest it and stretch it.

i get the same thing. do you stretch before you swim? i found that that sometimes helps avoid the cramping.

happens to me too. Its a chemical imbalance. Try getting pedialyte or drink more milk to bring your electrolytes back into balance. I would talk to your doctor.

i get those too! a few tips: 1. moving ur toe a lot is good. 2. dont bend ur toes too much. 3. and if u get one, slowly stretch ur toe to pull it back.

Everyone gets them, but not whenever they swim. I normally get them at least once when I'm swimming. And I know it's painful!

i heard drinking a small amount of pickle juice before a workout will cause your cramps to go away from all of the salt. gross right.
