Swimming Breathing Techniques?
-
Our lifeguard instructor told us that constantly keeping your head up while swimming to breathe is energy-consuming- what is the best way to breathe while not inhaling all of the time (in a way that I can keep my head in the water)? Thanks in advance!

Answer:
With freestyle make sure you are rotating your body to the side, this will make it easier to turn your head. Also you do not have to turn your head completely out of the water, ideally you want to have the water line going directly down the center of your face, between your eyes. Your momentum will create a pocket around your mouth for you to breathe. You can try this by just moving your hand along the water's surface and you'll see that pocket trailing behind your hand. As far as Butterfly, you can breathe every stroke if you want, whatever you are most comfortable with. Breaststroke, you want to breathe every stroke, because you will come out of the water every stroke. In regards to the poster who said stay under water the entire length, unless I am reading it wrong. You can't do this, you'll get disqualified. You are allowed to stay underwater off of any start or turn for up to 15 meters.

for lifegaurding you have to keep your head up so you can keep your eyes on where you are going. It sucks but it is the way you have to do it.

well....as a lifeguard techincally depending on the whereabouts of the victim you should swim with your head above the water....however to breath....head in water...breath to a side that you wish...the more comfortable...you should alternate but if your just starting one side is okay....breath in towards your armpit....when you turn your head back in blow out....say for instance....right arm left arm....breath to the right....over and over and over....good luck.....

When you do a stroke like freestyle, alternate your breathing. So every time you stoke with your right arm, take a breath. Or, every time you stroke with your left. If you do a stroke like butterfly or breaststroke, breathe every time you come up from a stroke. When you get better, do it every two times. When you swim underwater completely, don't come up until you have reached one third of the pool. When you are comfortable with that, go to one half, then the whole length.
