I need help with swim training.

How do i swim FAST... i really need help?

  • okay i've never really done competitive swimming but i've been training for about a month on my training without a instructor and i recently took a lifeguard test the lifeguard test requires a 50 yard dummy tow and a 200 yard medley swim the medley swim = 50 yards breast, 50 yds backstroke, 50 side and 50 free the dummy tow is pretty self explanatory... swim as fast as you can to the other side of the pool, dive down, grab the dummy, swim back up and sidestroke with the dummy to the other side... okay so anyways if you want to be a lifeguard the times you had to get were under 1:18 for dummy tow and under 3:52 for the IM portion a lot of the guys were really fast though and for the dummy tow they did it in like 50 seconds - 1:05 whereas my time was 1:17.... and for the IM portion the fast ones got in the 1 min 45ish seconds (or shorter) to 2 and a half minutes... i got a 4:20ish which of course was a fail =_= those guys sprint REALLY fast and i want to be fast like them too... i felt soooo slow compared to those other swimmers im sure i can become faster, i can trade stronger but i need advice on what to do to make myself a better swimmer, please help

  • Answer:

Those faster swimmers are probably on swim teams and you can't be as fast as them unless you swim on a team too and practice like them. Focus on passing test that you failed. You just need to practice it and you will get faster. If you can't practice in a 25 yard pool, practice in your 18 yard pool instead. The test is 200 yards, 50 of each stroke. In your 18 yard pool, that would be about 3 lengths of each stroke for 12 lengths total. That is 216 yards which is a little more, but if you go and practice that distance, the 200 yards will seem easier. Also, you need to practice diving in with your goggles. You can adjust them so the strap is tighter that should help. Try tilting your head differently when diving in with them on. Tucking your chin a little usually works works.

you can try eating carbohydrates, like macaroni or bread, the night before you do the test. Also, about the goggles, you can try getting a pair that has the rubber "outlines" that sort of plunge your eyes...if you understand... like, when you put them on, and slightly push them, you should feel the air go out of the little space. you should then feel like your eyes are going to be pulled out from the pressure. If this hurts, its correct...you will get used to it after a while... maybe, when you train, do all of the strokes and not only freestyle if that's the case... also, don't just swim the stroke, do kicking, drills, and pulling. you can use a kicking board for the kicking and then for the pulling you can put it in between your thighs, and use your arms. Putting it in between your thighs makes it harder to use your legs. Drills will help your technique, which if improved, should help your speed. There should be a club or pool somewhere nearby, where you can sign up and have a coach teach/train you...

S-Stroke. The key to all of the swimming strokes is moving your arms in a roughly S-shaped path through the water rather than pulling through in a straight line. Once you have the water moving with your hand, continuing that motion will get you very little push. Your hand needs to find new water to push through. So you trace an S.
