Rugby is a game not for weak hearted... Well it is considered feminish if a rugby player wear pads... And yes there are rugby pads, for head and for shoulder, but they are merely 1cm thick foam... Not like that in american football that they have plastic guards and stuff... Yes the starting position is different, in american football you have the quarter back been covered by the forwards, while in rugby a forward hits the ball to the other team for the game to start... Rugby: There is a row of forwards and then there is a staggered (slant) line which carries the ball... A total of 15 players... In rugby you can never pass the ball forward you always have to pass it backwards... But in contrast with this the american footballs quarter back throws the ball to the front... Other than the ball being similar in both codes, there are to many difference to mention in a posting forum such as this. However, people compare the padding differences and often wonder which is the tougher of the two sports. The regularity of the hits is much higher in rugby but the arms MUST be used in a wrapping fashion when tackling. In American football, the body can be used in a torpedo fashion with our without arm usage which makes for extremely high impact power. Such an impact without padding could in theory kill. The frequency of the hits is much lower however. In my opinion, the only way of really knowing is by asking someone who's played both codes to a high level.

There are various types of padding available for rugby -- I wear shin guards myself -- but they pretty much entirely consiste of a centimetre or two of foam stuffed inside of something. Rubgy rules explicitly forbid any type of padding which is made of a hard material like solid plastic. And plenty of players -- particularly the backs -- wear nothing at all, other than jersey, shorts, socks and boots. The rules are so different that you cannot really compare the positions for formations. Rugby is relatively simple in that there is really just one major rule -- play from "behind" the ball -- but the devil comes in the details.
