Why do railroads use timber ties on bridges and concrete ones on the ground?

Will turf studs work in my rugby boots on hard ground?

  • I am a rather new Rugger and have limited experience buying boots. I found some boots I really liked on Amazon. When I got them I started playing a bit of rugby with my friends behind my house (on soft ground) and the boots were amazing. On the first day of practice I found out the field was HARD, HARD, HARD. I put 4 perfect replica blisters on my feet and couldn't walk the next day. The studs were too long. Does any one know if the 9.5mm (3/8") turf studs will work on the hard ground? I have another set of hard ground foot ball boots I can use if I have to but I really like the new ones.

  • Answer:

Serious players will often keep several pairs of boots in their kit, and then select the pair for the day depending upon the playing conditions. I have a pair of regular studded boots I use for wet or soft surfaces, and then a pair of soccer boots with molded plastic blades I use on a hard field. Boots are a tool -- select the pair that will do the best job for you on a given day.

blm is right, you probably need several different pairs of boots. If you play multiple positions, you might even need to take it one step further. For example, I primarily play lock and flanker, but can sub in for either prop if necessary. Over the years, I have found that my heels slip out of low-top cleats when playing lock so I need high-top boots. But as a flanker or prop, low-tops are just fine and weigh a lot less. I typically take 3 pairs of boots with me to practice and 4 prs for games. A pair of high and low top stud boots and a pair of high and low top molded. I also keep a ready supply of both long and short spikes to be used as needed. It's all about knowing the surface you are playing on and finding what works best for you.
