Im looking to buy a new bike for local commute, and I have been looking at the racing bikes on offer but none suit what i want. i have a mountain bike frame - would it be possible to put racing bike tyres on to this frame? if so would it make a difference to the balance? also, is there a place to get cheap good tyres? thanks.

I'd recommend especially the Panracer Pasella TG http://www.qbike.com/cgi-bin/item.cgi?s=3&t=1&id=1018938 or Panracer T-Serve tires great flat protection, light, smooth rolling and decent in the rain. Very solid all around urban / commuting tires. On the new bike end try checking out shops that carry something other than "racing" bikes. Cyclo-cross http://www.konaworld.com/bike.cfm?content=jake bikes have room for bigger tires and fenders and more relaxed geometry and make excellent city bikes. Touring models like the Janis Aurora http://bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=2010&Brand=Jamis&Model=Aurora&Type=bike or the Surly Long Haul Trucker http://www.surlybikes.com/bikes/long_haul_trucker_complete/ are similar but a little longer in the wheelbase and both cyclo-cross and touring will have eyelets for racks and fenders. Also there are bikes like the KHS urban express http://www.khsbicycles.com/06_urban_xpress_07.htm . There really are a lot more options, but a lot of the mainstream shops haven't caught on to what is out there. Check out the blog HTTP://bikeportland.org and read some of their bike reviews. Yusuf It will help tremendously with the speed you get on the road.... a lot quieter too! Besides the smoother road type tires, talk to the shop about getting thinner tires on as well. Take off the old tires and mount the new ones. That easy! It will not be as fast or efficient as a road bike, or even a hybrid, but will keep you from a new purchase! If you have shocks, lock them out when you are out on the road, they will sap a lot of the speed and energy of your riding effort. There s no real difference in tire prices, just tire brands, get a good set of kevlar belted tires at the local bike store. Soccerref

Do you mean road racing tyres? In some mountain bike frames you can. You should check your frame and fork have enough clearance to allocate a 700c wheel and (a thin) tyre. But if you want to put those tyres, you need special wheels. You can either get custom made wheels (i.e. MTB hubs, no radial spokes and road rims) or special wheels such as Mavic Speedcity. If that seems too complicated, get yourself a pair of 26" road tyres (26x1.25 for instance). They are lighter and faster on the road, but have a bit more rolling resistance than proper road sized tyres (much less than a MTB tyre anyway) and also a harsher ride. Good luck.

You can get hybrid tyres and they dont cost a lot. Not racing but road/trail and narrow than mountain tyres
